Silk Oil consists of 4 layers of UV-cured modified organic oil-acrylates. Silk Oil easily penetrates into the surface pores of wood, where it polymerizes under UV light. In appearance, this type of hardwood flooring finish is similar to Hardwax Oil, but is distinguished by higher wear resistance.
Like Hardwax Oil, Silk Oil finish is used in conjunction with wire brushing technology. However, the protective elastic surface film formed by Silk Oil finish is thicker, which creates a visual effect of semi-sealed pores. This emphasizes the deep texture, relief and beauty of natural wood. Surface of hardwood floors coated with Silk Oil is pleasant and warm, like that of natural wood.
Silk Oil finish has a silky-matte surface gloss. Sheen level stays the same throughout the lifetime of the floor.
Due to UV-curing technology, Silk Oil finish has higher wear-resistance than hardwood floors, coated with Hardwax Oil. However, wear resistance of Silk Oil is still lower than that of UV-cured lacquer finishes. In areas where traffic is most intense, it is recommended to periodically apply Coswick restorative cleaners for oiled floors. Such floor cleaners consist of up to 10% wax, and, in addition to cleaning the floor surface from dirt, they renew worn-down finish.
UV-curing technology ensures excellent protection of Silk Oil floor surfaces against household solvents and food substances, such as coffee, red wine etc.
Care and Maintenance
Maintenance of hardwood floors with Silk Oil finish assumes regular (daily if necessary) cleaning from dust and grit using a vacuum, followed by a thorough cleaning with Coswick Hardwood Floor Cleaner or other similar product.
Floor surface areas that receive the most traffic and get worn down quicker, such as areas by the front door, hallways, kitchens etc., should be periodically cleaned with special Coswick Restorative hardwood floor cleaner. Aside from cleaning the floor, this product also restores the protective surface film. Frequency of use depends on type of interior and intensity of foot traffic. For residential interiors, restorative cleaning should be done 1-2 times a year; for public and commercial interiors with intense foot traffic, it is recommended to use the product 1-2 times a week.
As the floor finish wears down over time, full renewal may become necessary. This can be done using colorless Coswick Renewer for hardwood floors with Silk Oil finish. Following the initial cleaning of the floor surface using a vacuum and Coswick hardwood floor cleaner, apply finish renewer product onto the surface using a soft mop or cloth pad, and rub it evenly over the entire surface. Use 10-15 grams of finish renewer per square meter of floor surface. Drying time is less than 2 hours. This simple finish renewal procedure fully restores the original look and durability of the floor. For residential interiors, floor renewal procedure should be performed once in 3-5 years, depending on intensity of foot traffic and floor maintenance practices. For public and commercial interiors with intense foot traffic, finish renewal should be done 2-4 times a year.
Hardwood flooring with Silk Oil finish is distinguished by its high repairability. The repair procedure does not require for the planks to be replaced or for the entire floor surface to be refinished. In case of scratches or minor damages, wood surface can be restored by applying Silk Oil finish renewer directly onto affected areas. During repair of prestained Silk Oil floors, the procedure depends on severity of damage. Should the damage penetrate the finish all the way to the wood, then it is necessary to sand down affected area, apply corresponding wood floor stain, and seal the surface by applying Silk Oil finish renewer. Following the “spot repair”, it is recommended to complete the job by performing a full finish renewal in order to even out the gloss level across the entire floor surface.
Range of Use
Silk Oil flooring finish has high elasticity and resistance to ill effects of moisture and temperature fluctuations. For this reason, hardwood floors coated with Silk Oil can be installed in a wide range of interiors, ranging from condos and offices, to rural cottages. Given proper maintenance and regular restorative cleaning, floors with this type of finish are ideal for use bars and restaurants. Due to textured look and low surface gloss, Silk Oil disguises scratches, dents and other minor damages, which significantly eases floor maintenance.
Life of a hardwood floor coated with Silk Oil finish depends on timely care and restoration. With proper care and adherence to all recommendations regarding floor maintenance, Silk Oil floors will last a lifetime.
